3 Myths About Video Surveillance

Ever Burdened by the pointless running around on baseless myths? Are you looking for ways to escape the "me too" approach of assimilating information? Get rid of the following myths that plague every CEO/CIO/ Security Incharge.

Myth 1: Buy it and Install it - there's nothing more to it.

There's more to it. You would need sound objectives; a proper, pragmatic plan and even alternative plans. You must know precisely why you intend to have a surveillance system in place and it should be rational enough. For instance, you can't have a vague objective like " To stop Data Pilferage". A better objective would to " to bring down costs/losses related to data theft by 15% each year in succession"

Myth 2 : Video Surveillance can Bring Crime Rate Down

No it cannot. Although the justification of having a CCTV/Video Surveillance system is often done by quoting this myth, Crime has got nothing to do with you having video surveillance. If crime were to happen, it will. However, having an effective video surveillance system will at least help you get some data which could be used to solve this crime.

Myth 3 : Buy Cameras, Install — See what it costs and implement it if it falls within our budget

Far from it. What about the costs within the differences in the equipment choice? The running and maintainance of this equipment? The costs related to any data loss, failed back-up of recorded data and the like? Nothing in business can be that absolute. Your Budget for surveillance systems must flexible enough to accomodate business vicissitudes but still be focused enough to gain maximum return on your investment.
